The Mentalist: Season 1
"A mentalist is a master manipulator of thought and behavior." The mentalist is Patrick Jane (Simon Baker in an acclaimed performance), a celebrity psychic whose wife and child are viciously murdered by an elusive serial killer called Red John. Devastated, Patrick admits his paranormal act is fake, renounces his earlier life and uses his astonishing skills of observation and analysis - talents that made him appear psychically gifted - to bring killers to justice. At crime scenes across California, Patrick now helps an elite team of detectives break their toughest cases. But no matter how many criminals he catches, Patrick never forgets his central goal: Find Red John. And bring him down.

For the first two seasons I didn't even consider watching this show. It was only because we had nothing else to do (it was one of those "let's just veg" weekends) that we gave the show a try in the third season. As it turns out, one episode turned into a second and so on. We started watching mid-way in season 3 and both my wife and I found it fun to watch. Some lighter fare amongst all the gritty, dark, etc. shows on TV that we've been watching. The Mentalist is a nice reprieve from all that. It's light-hearted, perhaps even cutesy but we enjoy it. Give it a try, you may like it as well. Goes well with a good cup of tea. :-)Great series - 8grasshopper
The Mentalist has it all! It is very entertaining. It is a "who done it" show with a comedic flare. Very witty. Good characters. Each episode is worth watching. You will not be bored. We look forward to each weekly episode and so will you! Here's to the writers of this show!Quirky Dramedy at its Best - Old_Video_Man
Put this series at the top of your ZipList. This is a wonderful series that has it all: comedy, drama, police stories, mystery, great writing & direction, and near-perfect characters.
Simon Baker as Patrick Jane, in the title role is a modern day Sherlock Holmes, a psychologist and alleged psychic working with the relatively unheralded California Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Unlike the moody, depressed character he played for 3 seasons on "The Guardian", he provides many lighthearted scenes and super-sleuthing. I'm not the only one who loves Baker in this role; he's been nominated for the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
Robin Tunney, as his CBI boss, Special Agent Teresa Lisbon, is outstanding as well, clearing the bureaucratic red tape for Jane to do what he does best. She gives him enough rope to either get into deep trouble or solve the case.
You will also LOVE Tim Kang as Agent Cho, with totally deadpan delivery of both serious and incredibly witty dialogue.
There is no bad news. This is a case of good news and good news: Season 1 is coming to DVD September 22nd, AND the series has been renewed for a second season, with the premier on Thursday, September 24th. RENT THIS SERIES.
