New York Noir - Zillah
Like a trip back in time seeing this old classic--was Robert de Niro ever that young, or Harvey Keitel, and the others. Marvellous lighting of the night streets, and great music. The story moves along steadily, we know something terrible is coming, although perhaps not just what we expected. Betsy, a creature of sunshine and light (like an angel in white), one who can't abide the darkness of Travis's sleazy nightlife. Iris, the little flower of the night, a schoolgirl on drugs. Was it Vietnam which damaged Travis or was he always programmed to become a killer? Interesting voice over comments in the added feature; especially interesting the theory on why Travis gets a Mohawk haircut. Zillah70's Film-making at its Wonderful Weird Best - Mookie
This is one of those "classics" I just never got around to seeing before. After seeing it (with the commentary from Kolker - which is wonderful) I have a huge appreciation of this movie - but more from a thought provoking pov rather than an entertainment pov. Like some of the other 70's classics this is a different kind of film-making. Motivations aren't explained, there is a gritty feel to the film (i.e. we see the dirt in the world and everything is not sterile)and they weren't afraid to have unsymathetic characters.
I thought that this was an interesting exploration into the actions (we never see his mind) of a social outcast. What saved the movie for me was the ending after the big climax. As the commentary points out - you could have ended the film after the climax but what elevates this movie and makes you really think is what happens to the character afterward.
If you have seen this movie - rent it for the commentary. If you haven't - this is a movie worth seeing.Taxi Driver - Derekstar
I watched this for the first time in like 2004, and I didn't get it. It seemed to amble along at a slow pace, and I remember thinking that not a lot happened. What a difference this time around. This film may require two viewings, or I may have simply been emotionally under developed at the time, but yes, this film is a masterpiece. Put quite simply, DeNiro's performance in Taxi Driver is probably the best performance I've ever seen.
