Return of the Jedi is certainly the most action packed of the series, and is a fine conclusion to the Star Wars Saga. With Han Solo imprisoned by Jabba the Hut and the Empire building a new Death Star, the rebel alliance is facing an uphill struggle against the dark side, and only our favourite heroes can pull it off. With a deep timeless story of good vs. evil, "Return Of The Jedi" is a spectacular, emotionally charged film that redeems the good in all of us.A Fitting End to a Great Trilogy - MovieProf
When “Return of the Jedi” premiered in May 1983, it is not a stretch to say it was one of the most eagerly awaited films of all time. And here, in this third instalment of the “Star Wars” trilogy, the anticipation pays off with another strong story from George Lucas.
In this film, Han Solo is freed by his friends, which was likely anticipated, but perhaps more importantly, Ben Kenobi drops a bombshell on Luke Skywalker: his father is indeed Darth Vader...and he has a twin sister named Leia. The sister thing complicates things, as Luke and Leia exchange a rather passionate kiss in “The Empire Strikes Back” while a jealous Han Solo looks on—I guess this needs to be ignored now, as George Lucas likely didn’t have all the details figured out when he was writing “Empire.”
There are some excellent moments in this film: the first half hour or more, which introduces the audience to the notorious gangster Jabba the Hutt, and the journey to the Sarlacc Pit out in the desert, is fantastic. The hand-to-hand battles that ensue on board the skiffs as they hover the Sarlacc is also great fun. As well, the final battle that the Ewoks play a hand in is exciting. Critics at the time questioned whether or not these furry little creatures could in fact be able to battle stormtroopers, but this is just a movie. Finally, the final confrontation between Vader and Luke, anticipated since the last film, is splendid: we see that Luke has certainly progressed in his training, and that Vader is not longer the master of the light sabre.
All in all, this is an excellent film. However, the remastered version contains a few disappointments: a new dance number is created during the Jabba scenes, which is extremely annoying and far too “Earthy-sounding”; as well, the choice to edit in Hayden Christianson at the end as Anakin is also frustrating: I understand Lucas wanted the continuity with the new prequels, but there is too much tampering here.Weakest in the original trilogy, but still a great conclusion. - estefan
Though easily the weakest of the original trilogy, Return of the Jedi is still great entertainment. Luke, Leia and Han Solo are still a great team-up and there's no denying the triumph felt during the finale. The beginning in Jabba the Hut's palace runs too long, as they take forty minutes to finally leave Tatooine. The musical number randomly placed in is also distracting and adds nothing to the film. The other major issue is with the Ewoks, who are both annoying and not particularly dimensional, either. That said, the story itself is pretty great and the conflict in the relationship between Luke and Darth Vader is fascinating to watch, particularly their final light-saber duel. Return of the Jedi may not have the epic scope of the first two Star Wars entries, but it's a worth finale, nonetheless.
