I tried to get into the original Stargate series but just couldn't get past the second DvD of season one. SG Atlantis was even worse in that without having the back-stories of the original SG series I felt like a friend of a friend arriving at the middle part of a party. I did like the movie SG Continuum though and thought it time to give this franchise another try.
I think I’ve struck gold with Stargate Universe. It has just enough of the base arc of the Stargate series (the stargate and being out in the middle of the unknown) to give it the sci-fi credibility that the original movie had. At the same time it's current in terms of visual effects and production values and while it pays respect to the SG franchise it's fresh and new.
You don't need to be an SG groopie in other words to quickly identify with the characters and the plot and I can't wait for season 2 and, hopefully, those to follow. This two disc set (awesome in BluRay) is well worth the rental if you are a fan of sci-fi flics that put the human spirit in the mids of the fantastically unknown. To quote Jeff Bridges on the movie "Starman" - 'You humans are at your best when things are at their worst.' SGU, so far, reflects that.
Two thumbs up.Interesting and different - Murkk
I can't help but draw the conclusion that the writers in SGU drew their inspiration from Battlestar Galactica, and mixed in a bit of Star Trek Voyager and the Stargate series.
You have an rundown Ancient ship "Destiny". The crew evacuated to Destiny when their research base was attacked by unknown aliens. No one knows how to get back to Earth, but as Jack would say, they are "really" far away. They can still communicate back home with special stones that allow people to possess someone anywhere in the universe (from previous Stargate series).
Destiny seems to have a plan, but the systems onboard are indecipherable. The ship will leave hyperspace occasionally and enter a star system. Why did the ship stop? I imagine the crew will first use the communication stones to report to Jack back on Earth. Then they have three options to save the day: 1) the onboard systems, 2) the onboard stargate, 3) the shuttle.
SGU uses the tried and true Science Fiction formula that has existed since Star Trek first came on the air. What makes this series different is the tone of the show. Unlike the previous series, SGU is pretty stark. People die. Things don’t go nice. The crew just tries to find supplies, patch up the life support system and survive. It’s very much like Battlestar Galactica. However, it seems they still try to throw in some goofy characters to lighten things up. I’m not really sure if this formula will work… I think you either go for a gritty realistic series or you go for the fun space opera similar to the previous series.
It definitely will be interesting to see where this show goes in future episodes. Does it slide back to the original series mood or does it try to be the new Battlestar Galactica?
