We Were Warned
From Roland Emmerich, director of The Day After Tomorrow and Independence Day, comes the ultimate action-adventure film, exploding with groundbreaking special effects, starring John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet, Woody Harrelson and Danny Glover. Centuries ago, the Mayans left us their calendar, with a clear end date and all that it implies. Since then, astrologists have discovered it, numerologists have found patterns that predict it, geologists say the earth is overdue for it, and even government scientists cannot deny the cataclysm of epic proportions that awaits the earth in 2012. A prophecy that began with the Mayans has now been well-chronicled, discussed, taken apart and examined. By 2012, we'll know we were warned...

Yes, the bar for special-effects disaster movies is rightfully lower than the average. However, they set the bar for this one too low to limbo under. The decent effects aren't enough to counterbalance the awful script, odd casting, and overuse of coincidence and stereotype. There was also an awfully strong similarity to "When Worlds Collide", which did the story much better even without the modern special effects.
If you want to feel like a discerning viewer, you should pass on this one and stick with quality material like Independence Day.You can watch this with the sound muted - surfed
The special effects are great, a great experience for the eye but the plot and character development was just awful. A lot of what happens is just plainly unbelievable, planes being surrounded by Ash Clouds without stalling, or being in a pressure wave faster than their air speed (they would fall like a rock). Buildings collapsing like they are made out of cardboard and not concrete. And did i mention bad acting... oh my god....Great Special Effects - paintersteve
If you want to watch a movie where you can suspend disbelief and just enjoy the ride, this is the movie for you. There are a lot of plot holes and unbelievable action sequences, but wow are they exciting and do they look good. It's a fun summer movie that shows disaster, such as the end of the world, brings out the best and the worst in people.
