Lenny Henry was wonderful in his role as The Chef. He is sarcastic, an egotist, yet a fantastic Chef. On a daily basis, he has to deal with careless fools, incompetent assistants and a wife who's not only very randy, but she makes Sybil Fawlty look like Mother Teresa.Wonderful Sarcastic Comedy from the BBC - Gregg
Story of Gareth Blackstock (Lenny Henry) the black head chef at a top French restaurant in Britain. In the kitchen he is both a brilliant chef and a tyrant who vents his rage (often deserved) at his staff with wonderfully brutal putdowns. His most frequent target his Everton (Roger Griffiths) a trainee and former schoolmate. While outside the kitchen Gareth finds his wife Janice tends to have the upper hand.
The series is probably best appreciated by those that enjoy sarcastic humor though for fans of cooking it’s also interesting to see a series set inside a gourmet kitchen.
The comic timing and instincts of the three primary characters along with the writing are definitely the strengths of the series. Although most of the supporting cast gets limited screen time we do get the wonderful Claire Skinner in Season 1 and some other good supporting performances.
The series was created and largely written by Peter Tilbury based on an idea from Lenny Henry. Lenny Henry is married to Dawn French and continuse to appear in both televsion and movies including "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" he also writes some of his own shows.
Season 2 of "Chef!" is equally good but avoid Season 3 at all costs.I am a bastard! - XTRUClerk
I remember seeing Chef! years ago when it was first out but it never really caught my attention and I always flipped past it. I'm glad I'm discovering it now on DVD, it's a very funny series. If you're not into the whole insult sit-com genre (such as Becker) where one character basically berates all the other you might not like it yourself. Chef yells. He yells a lot. And though his rants tend to be witty, one cannot always understand what he's upset about. The supporting cast ranges from good to inconsequential (good being the wife and sou-chef, no one else really matters). A good Brit-Com to have a look at if you like all things and British. Cheers.
