A Classic Movie Adventure - Breathtakingly Reborn via Pioneering Technology - in a Stunning New Edition Never Before Possible.
With courage, sinew and conflict: that's how the west was won. With three directors, five interlocked stories, some of movie history's most legendary action scenes and a constellation of acting talent: that's how How the West Was Won was filmed. Henry Fonda, Gregory Peck, Debbie Reynolds, James Stewart and John Wayne are among the big names in this big saga following a family's move West through generations - marked by the spectacles of a heart-pounding raging river tide, a thunderous buffalo stampede and a bracing runaway train shootout. Via technological advances, this panoramic winner of three Academy Awards can now be seen with a resplendent, restored clarity eliminating its original "three-panel join lines" and in roof-raising Dolby 5.1 audio. Westward ho!

A stunning historical tapestry. - estefan
The equivalent of IMAX and 3-D today, How the West Was Won pulls you with its incredible wide, wide, WIDE-screen filmmaking that does an excellent job of showing the vastness of the landscape. The story itself is pretty standard historical drama, but that does not stop it from being interesting. Its almost three hour running time flies by and it's help by the three filmmakers keeping the stories short while still developing interesting personalities. With this group of actors, naturally, the performances are great all across the board. However, I was mainly awe-struck by the incredible travelogue of a picture.Time Has Not Been Kind - MovieLover5
I have a vague recollection of seeing this when it was new, and thinking it was pretty good. What a difference 46 years makes! It's overly long, boring for most of its 155 minutes, the script is pure corn in addition to being confusing, and if you're watching it to see all the stars of that era, you'll be disappointed as most of them are on screen for just a few minutes (e.g. John Wayne, Walter Brennan, Gregory Peck). To be honest, I'm not certain why you'd want to watch it.155 Minutes I'll Never Get Back - McStinky
I honestly don't know how I got through this one. How this film won the Oscar for best original screenplay in 1963 gets me. I found the story wondering and inconsistent and the situations contrived. Having most of the big stars of the day all in one movie does not make it a great film.
