Justified: Season 1
Timothy Olyphant (Damages, Deadwood) stars as a modern-day Western hero based on the character created by legendary crime novelist Elmore Leonard from his short story, "Fire In The Hole." Deputy Marshall Raylan Givens (Olyphant) is exiled to his hometown of Harlan County, Kentucky after the shooting of a Miami drug cartel hit man raises debate over his renegade style of law enforcement. Unfortunately it isn't long before the people he left behind begin to surface in the most unexpected ways.

This series succeeds because its lead Timothy Olyphant is so engaging to watch and because of the smart writing that leads to interetsing story threads you didn't see coming. It is fair to summarize it as a "Western set in modern times" with US Marshall Raylen Givens as the series hero. I felt the series started a bit slow after its first episode - but that is typical of many series who are trying to find their voice. By the end of the season it was firing on all pistons with a nice story line of Sons and Fathers. Like Burn Notice, another outstanding TV series, Justified does a great job of having a story that begins and ends in the episode and also has a storyline that plays itself out throughout the season. The side characters in the season storyline are across the board excellent and really make the series a stand out on TV. It's not my favourite series on TV but it is one I will continue to watch and hopefully enjoy.Noir - AKBGA
This is an interesting mix of Elmore's humour, and real noir. At times it seems to have elements of Deliverance, Blood Simple, and L.A. Confidential. The interesting dynamic in the relations between the main character, Raylan Givens and his father, at least in disc 1, make it interesting to watch.Wow - just a great series - lookingjust
If you've read any Elmore Leonard and like his style (especially his early westerns); you will love love love this series. The pilot is pretty closely based on one of his short stories, and the rest of the series very faithfully reproduces his "tone" and quirky sense of humour. Timothy Oliphant is absolutely perfectly cast as the love wolf U.S. marshall, who has a rather perverted sense of justice and has several flaws, mostly involving his inability to keep his hands (or any other part of his body) off of some of the town hotties (not that I blame him). The stories are smart, funny, violent (but not gratuitously so in most cases) and extremely satisfying. So highly recommended - I can't wait for season 2 to get here.
