I understood why Hanks thought his ego had gone overboard when I first saw it. However, I liked it then and appreciate its subtleties as it passes by all these years later on cable. It has quite a few elements I missed the first time around because the song and the attention to '60s detail had me reliving my childhood. There is something irrepressibly elating about the affect the meteoric rise of the song has on young people from a somewhat remote town in PA. I wonder how many people my age daydreamed about something like that happening to them? And the scene when they first hear their song over the radio evokes memories of soaring joy on those rare occasions when something came out so right. The warning from Del Paxton to Guy about bands was nice scripting. I can't imagine it working as well if it had a more in-depth message.Well made period piece - Coconut_Willy
Let's just say up-front that this is a light, family-oriented movie which, without making you laugh out loud from beginning to end, is a lot of fun to watch. Simple storyline with simple characters that will indeed make you reminesce of simpler times. I really enjoyed this movie, being a big music fan, particularily of that specific 50's-60's period. It reminded me of numerous one-hit-wonders that I saw on the tube in the late 60's. All the production values here are good; the cast is good doing a good acting job with a well written dialogue, the sets and locations are perfectly appropriate, the soundtrack is good and the camera work is professional. Some may say that you get tired of hearing the main theme song but that is the point the movie is trying to make. Well made entertaining film that I would recommend to every one.Watching this movie is ONE-derful! - TheShamus
"That Thing You Do" was a low-budget movie ... and it proves you don't need a heap of money to put out a great product. There is never a point that you say to yourself, "This looks like a cheap movie".
In fact, this is a fictional story, set in the 1950's ... with a group of guys who set up a band and make a hit single. They get some fame and popularity and tour. Although fictional, it's a good piece about what it was like to be in a band in the 1950's -- getting a hit single, touring, promoting it -- until the pressures on the band cause friction. Some bands last longer, some just fade away.
Liv Tyler is excellent as the girlfriend of one of the band members ... Tom Hanks is excellent (as normal). The music is catchy ... simple. The lessons are universal -- and it's just a great slice of life from a (perhaps) simpler time.
This movie is generally "family friendly" ... so you can watch it all together and get something out of it.
