3.5 stars - Not the best season, but still pretty good. - lookingjust
Of the 5 seasons so far, this one seems to me to be the weakest. It is a bit flat, the whole Dexter theme seems a bit worn out. It is hard to top the incredibly good season 4 - which was mostly so good because of the wonderfully evil guest turn of John Lithgow as the Trinity Killer. In contrast, Julia Stiles seems mostly a bit baffled as how to play the main guest character in this season; the real villians are all a bit forgettable, and Dexter seems a bit lost as well (which is intentional I assume, he is coping with the life change of having his wife murdered, but even so...). All that said, the season gets better in the last few episodes, and is definitely worth renting if you're at all a fan of the show in general. Better watch while you can - the word on season 6 is that it isn't very good; I'm guessing it will be the last one.The solution to grieving - Sigridmac
As season five begins, Dexter has lost Rita, who was murdered by the Trinity Killer. She tries to bond with her children but Astor, the oldest girl, blames Dexter for her death. Before he came along, their family was fine. That's a bit of revisionist history because she had an abusive father, but he had been out of the picture for a while.
So, our pal Dex packs Astor and Cody off to stay with their grandparents while he keeps Harrison, the little baby that he is now so terrified will become just like him since Harrison has also witnessed the brutal murderer of his mother.
And when Dexter is stressed out, guess where he turns for relief?
One of the best series on HBO. I look forward every year to a new release. Our Friendly Neighborhood Sociopath falls in love. - cathyottawa
Or something very much like it.
The shocking exit of Rita in last season's finale has left Dexter alone, confused, a single parent.....and still a killer. Poor Dexter's life just gets more and more complicated.
This season is all about soul searching for Dexter. Harry's ghostly presence is used to great effect here. Dexter needs Harry, even as he continues to question Harry's logic, and think about his broken childhood. What if Dexter were to enter a relationship with someone just as broken as he is? Enter Lumen.
This season really digs deep into just who Dexter is. Is he really a sociopath? Is he really incapable of love? Can he be a good father to Harrison? Can his old wounds heal?
Of coarse we also have our trusty villain this season, giving us an edge of your seat cat and mouse chess game between Dexter and his prey.
They packed a lot of story into these twelve episodes, as the writing just gets stronger, and the characters more defined. I actually read the first three Dexter books a few weeks back, and I have to say, the show is ten times better. The show's writers have really delved into Dexter the person, and been far more creative with Dexter's foes, struggles, and psychology.
My only complaint? The somewhat boring Batista and Laguerta romance, which is a fairly big subplot this season.
