1984
Based on the novel by George Orwell...
This stunning film adaptation "journeys straight to the heart of the nightmare" (Variety) portrayed in George Orwell's terrifying classic. John Hurt is "perfect" (The Washington Post) as a doomed rebel, and Richard Burton "is a model of powerful restraint" (Chicago Tribune) as a sadistic agent of the ruling party.
Winston Smith (Hurt) endures a squalid existence in totalitarian Oceania under the constant surveillance of Big Brother. But his life takes a horrifying turn when he begins a forbidden love affair and commits the crime of independent thought. Sent to the chillingly labeled "Ministry of Love," he is placed as the mercy of O'Brien (Burton), a coolly treacherous leader determined to control his thoughts...and crush his soul.

This movie was really cool but I think they predicted the future wrong. They should have set it further ahead in the future because in 1984 it wasn't like that. I was there so I remember. Maybe England was like that, I don't know. There was some nudity which made me feel uncomfortable. I think they should have banned this movie.Read a book - Len_M
This a very good adaption of a prophetic book. For those of you who thought the movie was not realistic, go vacation in North Korea for a few years. The concepts that were outlined in 1948 by George Orwell are alive in many places of this world.
If you are sitting in your parents basement, unaware of history and politics, then don't watch this movie, it will confuse you as it did the other critics. If you want insight into the true nature of people rent this movie, or better yet read a book.more boring than I remembered - Ottawa_JP
I loved the book, and saw the movie when I was pretty young and didn't remember much of it. So I was pretty excited at the idea of watching it again.
Unfortunately, I was kind of let down. The movie is slow... very slow. I actually fell asleep watching it, and that never happens.
I should probably give it a second try, the film ending might be worth the dry spots... but this time I'll bring a coffee with me. :)
