Great Movie - LoriOntario
This was a better than average murder mystery movie which held my interest throughout the whole film.
Nicholas Cage does an excellent job of portraying a private detective who becomes obsessed with a case. He must track down some seedy characters. His client requested confidentiality which makes his investigation more challenging and puts him in danger.
If you are looking for a riveting murder mystery, then this is a good movie to watch.Good enough detective movie - Coconut_Willy
At first, I thought I had never seen this one but I actually had seen some parts of it on television. It is a good enough detective story that is coherently developed all the way to the end with a nice view of the main character's growing disgust with the sleazy world he is forced to enter. To constantly go back to his wife and daughter might have been a bit much but it did reinforce the point the director was trying to make. The cast is quite good doing a fine acting job with a good enough dialogue and very good characters. The sets and locations are very appropriate, the soundtrack is OK (although I did not get the oriental/arabic twist) and the camera work is good. There are a few tough scenes here but not too many. The better aspects of this film, in my opinion, are first the script, closely followed by the acting of the main characters. Worth watching.Good detective film. - d---
This film follows a private investigator's quest into the underground porn industry to determine whether or not a snuff film found by a rich widow is authentic. The concept alone will disturb some viewers and probably spoil the movie for them, though I personally didn't feel it was too graphic or overdone. To be sure, it is brutal at times, but not distastefully so.
That said, I felt this was one of Nick Cage's more credible performances as the aforementioned P.I. Joaquin Phoenix is great in his supporting role as Cage's tour guide into the seedy underbellies of LA and NYC, while Catherine Keener's character was like nails on a chalkboard to me. Yeah, you want him to come home, we get it already.
For me, the strength of the movie was Cage's detective work. I would recommend this to anybody that enjoys TV shows like C.S.I. or Law and Order. They may not be realistic, but it is fun to watch a mystery unravel like this sometimes.
Sound quality is excellent and video quality is very good, especially since this is a dark film.
A solid 3 out of 5, but with the caveat that sensitive viewers avoid it at all costs.
