A Dog Of Flanders
From the Classic Children's Tale!
"Can we keep him?" young Nello asks. Just like that, the curly-haired black dog Nello finds lying battered and abandoned in a ditch becomes part of the boy's life. Nello doesn't know it yet, but the dog will soon become more than a pet. He'll be his best friend in the whole world.
The magnificent canine is by the boy's side through good and bad times as Nello sticks to his goal of becoming a talented artist in A Dog of Flanders. The impressive historical sites and countryside of Flanders (a part of Belgium) provide the film's locations. And Jon Ought, Jack Warden and Cheryl Ladd are among the veteran stars of this eye-filling movie rooted in sentiments and life lessons that are timeless.

Not A Dog Movie - bwod
For those who enjoy a good Charles Dickens story, "A Dog Of Flanders" will do the trick, providing you don't expect the story to revolve around the dog. Ouida wrote a touching short story about a boy growing up in a hostile world, where the hero has little else besides his loyal companion "Pitasche", a big, furry Bouvier de Flandres.
John Voight appears in the film and is very good. The boy is played by Jesse James. He has a big job to carry this movie, and does so well enough. His dog helps, most admirably, but only in a supporting role.
Bottom line, this movie will entertain well enough, and actually moves you to tears, occasionally. I recommend it for children and adults, but only marginally. One thumb up.
