A Perfect World
Double Academy Award winners Kevin Costner and Clint Eastwood confront each other from opposite sides of the law in A Perfect World, an acclaimed, multilayered manhunt saga (directed by Eastwood) that rumbles down Texas backroads toward a harrowing collision with fate.
Costner plays Butch Haynes, a hardened prison escapee on the lam with a young hostage (T.J. Lowther in a remarkable film debut) who sees in Butch the father figure he never had. Eastwood is wily Texas Ranger Red Garnett, leading deputies and a criminologist (Laura Dern) in a statewide pursuit. Red knows every road and pothole in the Panhandle. What's more, he knows the elusive Haynes - because their paths have crossed before.

a bit dull with a lack of a strong female character - tbird
i rented this because clint eastwood is an interesting actor, but i think the script could have used a bit more thought. the boy isn't really a realistic character. he would be crying for his mom and traumatized after seeing his mom threatened with a gun. i think they idealized and romanticized the kidnapper a bit too much.the movie lacks a certain depth.A Great Film, Eastwood's Best - Mr_Humidty
This is an entirely overlooked, under-appreciated film. In general, I don't like the films Clint Eastwood directs, but with this one, he knocks it out of the park.
Kevin Costner is absolutely great as an escaped convict. On the lamb, he picks up a boy, initially as a hostage, though they quickly become friends. On the run, their story becomes an exploration of morality, violence, and family. It feels like a Cormac McCarthy novel, but this was a decade before his books, like "No Country for Old Men," were such hot Hollywood properties.Good movie but disappointing - Netflix4Life
Kevin Costner is probably more known for making box-office bombs than he is making quality movies however this movie is certainly one of those movies that should make any Kevin Costner fan proud.
I felt that the movie was well done and as the movie progressed, there seemed to have been more of a growing relationship between the very young boy and his captor. However by the end of the movie, I felt disappointed in how it ended and wasn't something that I was hoping for either.
It would have been interesting to see a different ending and then a sequel showing the young boy growing up and possibly becoming like Costner's character. This movie was worth the rental.
