What could easily have been another irritatingly earnest, clueless depiction of orthodox Jewish stereotypes, unfolds as an involving, challenging, and most importantly respectful treatment of an often misrepresented religion.
A fantastic performance by Griffith, genuinely captivating.Very Interesting to learn more about the Jewish Faith - babynurse
I would give this about a 6/10. If you are looking for action and gunfire in this murder mystery this is the wrong movie. My husband who loves mysteries and action was pleasently surprised by this engaging story. The escape into the purity of the lifestyle of the Hasidic Jews amongst the loose morals and corruption of present day New York City is a reassuring haven of saftey. Very interesting to see the 2 worlds blend by having "the stranger" among them. You almost wish the "stanger" could be won over to join the Jewish faith. A surprise love story!A good story line. - leo1jm2
although the acting of Melanie Griffith is somewhat mediocre and even strained, the story line is quite good. for an in depth view of the customs and mores of the Hassidic Jew it is quite good, with a story line that is very plausible. the assides, though plausible and very possible, are strained by the acting, dripping with insincerity.
It did not keep me on the edge of my seat, and the ending turned out to be quite a surprise, but the climax was a bit of a let down because of the acting.
