A Time To Kill
From the best-selling author of The Firm and The Client

ONE of the BEST FILMS EVER! - Filmaholic
This is without a doubt one of the best films to explore racism that I have ever seen.
The interplay between the racism on the part of the white citizens AND the flagrant racism exhibitted by the members of the NAACP towards Jake show that racism is complex and not easily solved.
The director has done a masterful job and there are so many little gems in there.
It is a long film; however, it is well worth it. Get this film now and watch it. You will truly be glad you did.One Of Gisham's Best - Joesmo9999
A Time to Kill, based on the first novel by John Grisham, is a skillfully constructed morality play that pushes all the right buttons and arrives at all the right conclusions.
To its credit, A Time to Kill allows the debate to snake through the entire movie, engagingly pitting characters and speeches against each other, creating a dramatic forum for ethical debate uncommon in most commercial American films. What is Justice? - cathyottawa
That is what this movie is really about.
While it's largely about the racial tensions still prevelant in the southern states, and the ignorant racism that still thrives there, this movie is also about vigilantism, and the death penalty.
This movie is asking, is there ever, truly, a time to kill?
This film isn't easy to watch, partly because it's not as far fetched a story line as you'll want to believe. Justice is not blind, and racism and classism have yet to be eradicated from the system.
I do think this movie goes over the top in parts, and the ending in particular is looking to manipulate your emotions - but this is a film that makes you think. As Donald Sutherland's character in the movie says, this is a case where, if the man goes free, it's justice, and if the man is found guilty, it's justice.
The acting is top notch all around, with Kevin Spacey and Keifer Sutherland both doing a great job of playing jerks. Mathew McConaughey is perfectly cast as the young lawyer, and Sandra Bullock and Ashley Judd turn in good supporting work. Samuel L. Jackson is comfortable in his role as the working class father.
They keep the details of the crime against the little girl a secret, offering only glimpses of what happenned, until the very end. It makes McConaughey's closing speech, where he describes the rape in excruciating detail, quite powerful.
Somewhat "hollywoodized", but still a good movie about important issues.
