Agnes Of God
That Night, Murder Wasn't The Only Sin.
Academy Award®-Winners Jane Fonda, Anne Bancroft and Academy Award®-Nominee Meg Tilly star in this unforgettable emotionally charged suspense film masterly directed by Norman Jewison (Moonstruck, The Hurricane).
An isolated convent becomes the setting for murder in this riveting film of spiritual passion and pride that was nominated for 3 Academy Awards.
When the infant of a young nun, Agnes (Tilly), is found strangled, a court-appointed psychiatrist, Martha Livingston (Fonda), must decide if the devout but troubled girl is fit to stand trial. In her quest for truth, Martha goes head-to-head with the intractable Mother Superior (Bancroft), who assures her that Agnes has no memory of the pregnancy. But the probe uncovers mysterious aspects of Agnes' personality, which lead to a shattering climax. Is Agnes Of God a hysterical young woman - or is her ordeal divinely inspired?

i thought the plot was lacking a bit.the ending was a tad bit disappointing.the cinematography was great as well as the acting.some of the scenes were a bit repetitious.i know it won a lot of awards but maybe people fell in love with the idea of the movie and the director who everyone loves and sort of forgave the shortcomings. worth renting but i don't think it is a great film.Nominated for 3 awards - Mike21
Great movie, Great Actors. At a convent, fragile, unearthly Sister Agnes gives birth (she says it's a virgin birth), but the child dies. The police soon are involved because of the death of the baby. However, the main conflict is between Mother Superior Miriam Ruth, who wants Agnes left alone, and Dr. Martha Livingston, a psychiatrist determined to help Agnes gain a stronger grasp on reality and uncover any wrongdoersAgnes of God - AppsScraps
Way back in 1985 Canadian uber-director Norman Jewison took John Pielmeier's stage play, Agnes of God, and turned it into a decent film. Taking the mysterious birth (and death) of a novice nun's newborn baby as its starting point, the movie forces us to examine our views of all things religious. Starring Jane Fonda as Dr. Martha Livingston, the psychiatrist sent to examine the unholy business and interview the novice nun; a never more brilliant Meg Tilley as the nun in question and Anne Bancroft as Mother Miriam Ruth, the film is essentially a struggle between faith, represented by Mother Ruth and fact, represented by Dr. Livingston. The real drama here lies in the exchanges of the relapsed Catholic and the zealous Mother Ruth as she tries to hide her own involvement in mysterious birth.
My rating 7 out of 10.
