Airplane!
"Don't Call Me Shirley!" Edition
"One of the top ten funniest movies ever made!" -American Film Institute
Voted "one of the 10 funniest movies ever made" by the American Film Institute, Airplane! is a masterpiece of off-the-wall comedy. Featuring Robert Hays as an ex-fighter pilot forced to take over the controls of an airliner when the flight crew succumbs to food poisoning; Julie Hagerty as his girlfriend/ stewardess/ co-pilot; and a cast of all-stars including Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Leslie Nielsen, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar...and more! Their hilarious high jinks spook airplane disaster flicks, religious zealots, television commercials, romantic love...the lists whirls by in rapid succession. And the story races from one moment of zany fun to the next!

when i was watching i kept wishing i would have been watching it in theatres when it was first released. i knew it should have been hilarious, but i never found myself laughing. this movie is clearly the inspiration for the no longer funny show, family guy...which has made it so all cut aways and puns are expected and unfunny.
if family guy was never made, i would have loved this movie.Surely you liked it. - SStones
If you say you didn't like "Airplane!", surely you have it confused with another movie. In England and possibly other markets it was titled "Flying High" and now in our internet linked "Global Community" I speak to people who don't seem to know what "Airplane!" is, then remember loving it when it is described and insisting that "Surely that wasn't what the movie was called."
Yes, they're probably baiting you. They too know that it is the masterful great-grandaddy. Surely it will forever remain the benchmark to which all disaster spoofs will aspire.
Don't call me Shirley! So stupid that it’s brilliant. - filmgeek
There really hadn’t been a comedy quite like this before. Now, they are commonplace, but they still cannot top this original masterpiece. This is a movie where logic is thrown right out the window. The jokes come fast and furious, and the filmmakers do not really give you a chance to breathe before they hit you with another joke.
The cast is perfect because for all the insanity of the material, they all play it dead straight, as if it were a high drama that they were in rather than a comedy, this of course only serves to make the jokes even funnier. I will not attempt to give examples, as that would only cheapen the joke and spoil part of the movie for you. Just know that if you enjoy hearing really bad puns, then you will no doubt find much to enjoy in this film.
Highly Recommended.
