Akira Kurosawa's Dreams
"Astonishingly beautiful. Pure screen enchantment." -Vincent Canby, The New York Times
Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola and other moviemakers cite him as a primal influence. The Magnificent Seven, A Fistful of Dollars and the Star Wars sagas were inspired by his work. He's Akira Kurosawa, considered one of the 20th-century's greatest film directors.
Akira Kurosawa's Dreams is one of the most visionary, deeply personal works in the 60-years career of the master behind Rashomon, The Seven Samurai and Ran. Comprised of eight episodes rich in imagery and insight (and featuring Scorsese as Vincent Van Gogh), it explores the costs of war, the perils of nuclear power and especially humankind's need to harmonize with nature. You will be enchanted...and enthralled.

Beautifully filmed collection of short stories, some more narrative than others, all fascinating. Stories of the spirits of a blossoming orchard, a struggle between mountaineers and the vengeful spirit of a blizzard, a boy who witnesses the wedding procession of the foxes against his mother's dire warnings... tales that linger in the eye and the mind. A slow moving, painterly approach that richly rewards the patient viewer. George Lucas begins to repay his stylistic debt to Kurosawa by providing astounding visual effects support.A Painting - Jimmy_Jam
This film is a work of art in many ways, but I look at it as a person looking at several different paintings in a gallery. Each is its own entity and must be looked at as such. It is a series of short dreams and should be viewed and evaluated as such. There are themes that connect them, but not a linear plot running through it. Some of the dreams may seem odd, but the film rests on the visual as does our dreams. Not to say there isnt a message, because there cleary is, but the visuals are where this film is at - completely beautiful.A film all on its own - Gramturismo
Dreams is almost like a moving painting, there are a lot of parts where you'll just be looking at it rather than following action or dialogue. Each of the eight stories like the title suggests has a dreamlike element to it, some more than others. Viewers who are put off by subtitles shouldn't worry because there isn't nearly as much dialogue as you tend to get in other films. All together a good choice for someone looking to broaden their movie experience.
