Kevin Spacey's Directorial Debut - Gregg
This ‘film noir’ tribute was the directorial debut of Kevin Spacey and stars; Matt Dillon, Faye Dunaway, Gary Sinise, M. Emmet Walsh, Joe Mantegna, Viggo Mortensen, John Spencer, William Fichtner, Skeet Ulrich.
A trio of small time criminals (Dillon, Sinise and Fichtner) takes the patrons of a bar in New Orleans hostage after a botched robbery. The performances are good with the seeming exception of Mantegna who I usually like. Though there are some atrocious accents both from Dunaway and from Mortensen trying to play a French Canadian.
The film takes place for the most part within the confines of the bar and includes lots of dialogue; consequently it bears some resemblance to a play. The lack of action and wordy script might not be for everyone, but for the most part it’s well done and for those that are content with the setup it should be entertaining.
It certainly appears that Spacey has some talent as a director, and the story is fairly well written. In one nice nod to the films of the past some of the scenes of violence are carried out just out of frame. The film was largely unsuccessful and received mixed to sub par reviews despite the talent assembled. The limited budget may certainly have been a factor but other low budget films were far more successful. Not all that great... - Chris_A.
An interesting storyline but it gets a little jumbled. There is a good lineup of actors in this movie and some decent acting but the whole thing falls a little flat in the end. To be honest, I expected more from the film because of the cast. Maybe Kevin Spacey should just stick to acting.Quirkiness keeps one watching - pfaulkner
Not the greatest story ever told but just quirky enough to keep one watching and interested in what will happen next.
Matt Dhillon is convincining, though this was not the best performance for Gary Sinese.
And while John Spencer was wasted in this film. Faye Dunaway was a perfect fit.
Worth taking a look.
