Alice In Wonderland
From the elaborate Broadway revival of the 1932 Eva Le Gallienne/Florida Friebus production comes a whimsical retelling of the Lewis Carroll classic. In director Kirk Browning's enchanting adaptation, Alice's adventure in the land of fantasy is presented within a contemporary framework. An all-star ensemble cast - including Richard Burton and his daughter Kate - makes this a stellar version of a truly timeless tale and a great theatre treat for young and old alike.

The weirdest dvd I've ever watched. I rented it because it's the first film Nathan Lane appeared in, but what an experience... Part of the Broadway Archive Series, it doesn't even try to emulate a stage play, though it obviously is what it's constructed as, but no attempt was made for smooth transitions between scenes. You can actually see the wires moving the various props and the actors sweating under the lights. Unfortunately, Nathan's scene was one of the first ones, (it's also actually on YouTube) so the rest of the film/play was a bit of a slog. Some interesting performances, though I felt the whole piece was a private party for Broadway insiders. The other highlight was the scene between Alice (Kate Burton) and the Knight (Richard Burton). The daughter-father chemistry was nice to see. Other notable appearances in this film: James Coco, Donald O'Connor and Maureen Stapleton. The end credits are one of the most awkward ever witnessed, with each main actor deadpanning into the camera with their name listed below their mug. All in all all, I think this dvd would be best appreciated after a few puffs of the caterpillar's hookah...
