When a gang of these Newcomers kills a police detective's (James Caan) partner, he sets out to solve the crime with his new partner (Many Patinkin) -- the L.A.P.D.'s first Newcomer detective. I saw this flick several years ago. It is a fascinating concept. I thought they could have spent more time on the cultural interaction between two interplanetary races, rather than another cop movie. The comparison with racism in our own world could have been emphasizes more.
I would rate this show as worth seeing. Perhaps the previous reviewer is correct-a sequel might be better.A cool concept. - cathyottawa
An alien ship crash lands on earth (in the states of coarse). The aliens on board are held in quarentine, and it is discovered that they are a slave race, bred for hard labour. Soon, they are released and allowed to integrate into American society.
Luckily, they are a race that learns quickly, picking up English in a few months. We also learn that they are very adaptable and intelligent.
I rememeber really liking the TV show that was based on this movie, which is why I wanted to see this.
Had this not began as a bad 80s cop movie, and ended as a bad 80s cop movie, complete with car chase and "gotcha" moments, this would have been pretty good.
What was disappointing is, they made the "newcomers" too similar to humans. "Slagtown" is no different from chinatown or little italy - they're just like any other immigrants. They have the same desires as us. The same emotions. The same shortcomings. And they embrace the idea of money all too readily.
And while racism is a key theme, it was still a stretch to think they were integrated so quickly. This takes place 3 years after the crash. Take away the quarentine time, and that doesn't leave much. But many are in top, well respected jobs.
I still think this is a cool concept thought, and this is ripe for a remake.
