All The Pretty Horses
An adventure beyond your wildest dreams.
Academy Award®-winner Matt Damon (Saving Private Ryan, Good Will Hunting) stars in director Billy Bob Thornton's action filled tale of love and loss based on Cormac McCarthy's best-selling novel. John Grady Cole (Damon) and his best friend Lacey Rawlins (Henry Thomas) leave Texas and head south of the border in search of adventure and find work as horse wranglers. But when Cole embarks on an illicit and passionate affair with the beautiful daughter (Penélope Cruz, All About My Mother) of the wealthy ranch owner who is his employer, events are set into motion which forever change the lives of all involved. Breathtakingly photographed and acted, All The Pretty Horses has been hailed as "One of the best films of the year. A passionate and poignant epic." -Westwood One Radio

The horses are certainly pretty, and who could complain about Penelope Cruz, the lovely senorita who leads the gullible hero into big trouble. But this anti-romantic treatment of the Zorro tradition and American innocents running foul of Mexican injustice has plenty of ugliness and violence to bring us up to date. Canadians who are about to plan a vacation to Mexico should maybe see this first.Lots of horses, but definately not pretty - jungforu
When I first heard of this movie, I was expecting a beautiful love story. However, after watching it, I realized how wrong I really was. Rather, this movie was more of an ode to the life of an American cowboy living in Mexico, which a quiet, moves-at-a-snail's-pace plot line. Needless to say, I was not impressed. I will definately not be watching this movie again.Falls short of expectations for a McCarthy adaptation - Mr_Humidty
I've read most of Cormac McCarthy's novels and admired them. So I don't know exactly what I was expecting with a flim adaptation of his novel. I guess, I wanted a film I would admire, too (like "No Country for Old Men").
This film falls short in that regard, and I attribute that largely to the direction. Though I don't know it did fall short exactly. I think it has to do with the fact that film is a much more literal medium than literature. When reading a novel, one's imagination can create a setting and tone that make the story work. With a film, it all has to be on the screen. Once this story was on the screen, it didn't seem to work.
