Another Woman
"Two Thumbs Up! I Was Mesmerized From Beginning To End!" -Roger Ebert, "Siskel and Ebert"
Writer/director Woody Allen delivers a powerful, "searing adult drama" (Leonard Maltin) examining the life of an accomplished philosophy professor teetering on the brink of self-understanding. Boasting a superb cast led by Gena Rowlands, Mia Farrow, Ian Holm and Gene Hackman, Another Woman is Allen's 17th triumphant film. Stylistically rich and technically expert, the film layers past and present, dialogue and narration, reality and metaphor, to achieve a "lucidity and compassion of an order virtually unknown in American movies" (Time Magazine).
Intelligent, accomplished and happily married, Marion (Rowlands) considers her life fulfilling...until a chance encounter with a troubled stranger (Farrow) offers her a brief but piercing glimpse at her inner emptiness. Drifting in a loveless marriage and denying her feelings for another man (Hackman), Marion is shocked when she accidentally learns of her husbands (Holm) infidelity. Taking this as a sign to change her life, Marion confronts the true depth of her own emotional hunger...and the frightening intensity of a passion she has ignored for too long.

a thought provoking film about a middle aged woman who has lived life with bottled up emotions and as a result has been a bit nasty toward others. she realizes how mean she has been and this is a cold shock to her system.she has closed doors on opportunities to grow and to blossom.
you wonder what is next for this lady. what will be the next chapter of her life.
there is humor though subtle.Another woman - PowaPete
In the end, who is the "other female" pointed to in the film's title? Farrow, as the volcano for Rowlands' own inside journey, seems like a clear candidate, and another role assumes the status of a rival that the label "another woman" is used for. All of these opionions are worthy, but as the script of a person who makes such shocking realizations about her self and her behavior, the other person seems to be Rowlands herself, who has begun to realize how different she has become from the person she used to be, and the person she assumed she still was.Reflections on a Life Lived - legalwright
Gena Rowlands delivers a strong performance as Marion Post, a middle aged philosophy professor who wakes up to the consequences of her decisions in life. Blessed with a sharp intellect, she had chosen and attained a stellar career in academia at the expense of having a family and closer ties with her brother and husbands.
Another Woman allows us to witness the awakening of Marion. An expert at self control, Marion begins eavesdropping on psycho-therapy sessions being conducted in the adjacent suite. This causes her to question her own situation as she recognizes that her present marriage is passionless. Once she opens the door to her denial, she is helpless to prevent the flood of emotional issues that come into play.
There is no Woody Allen humour in this film whatsover. The dialogue is clearly written by Allen and this is, in my opinion, one of his strongest films. It is not nihilistic in tone as is the case in many of his other films. Marion comes through the film poised to make changes in her life in her pursuit of happiness. Four stars.
