Antigone
"An outstanding dramatic contribution." -Variety
With fierce originality, this powerful adaptation of the Sophocles tragedy presents a world of honor, treachery and fateful consequences. Acclaimed actress Genevieve Bujold skillfully combines element of zealotry and idealism in her effecting portrait of Antigone. Jean Anouilh's retelling of "Antigone" shows the inescapably wrenching central confrontation between Antigone and Creon by presenting Bujold and Weaver seated at a long, executive-suite table - a hallmark of Anouilh's play. The New York Times critic John J. O'Connor lauded this Antigone as "well acted, well directed and beautifully staged."

Honour, duty and stubborn pride take centre stage in this brilliant contemporary adaptation of Jean Anouilh's 1944 play based on Sophocles' tragedy. Genevieve Bujold's searing portrayal of Antigone, equal parts blind idealism and naive cynicism, is perfectly matched by Fritz Weaver's Creon, a tired and inflexible tyrant whose crown weighs heavier than he is willing to admit, while television veteran Stacy Keach provides a passionate yet oddly sardonic Greek Chorus. Filmed in and around an actual playhouse for American TV's "Great Performances" this teleplay suffers from the usual problems of old video: the sound is rather flat, the colours faded and there is a bit of peripheral distortion; but its powerful leads, combined with some wonderfully theatrical sets makes this a tour de force worth renting.
