Back To School
Extra-Curricular Edition
Strap on your backpack and get ready to study hard... Back To School is in session with this all-new Extra-Curricular Edition. Rodney Dangerfield (Caddyshack) stars in this uproarious college classic "sure to be cherished by all his fans" (Los Angeles Times), this "perfect after-finals movie" (The Hollywood Reporter) guarantees "the smile will never quite leave your face" (UCLA Daily Bruin). Thornton Melon's (Dangerfield) life isn't making the grade. His wife's a sleazy socialite, he made his fortune being "Tall and Fat" and he never got a higher education. So when he finds his unhappy and unpopular son about to quit college, the solution to all Melon's problems becomes clear... enroll at the school himself! But as the flamboyant father struggles to aid his son, he can't help becoming the college cool kid as he turns the university upside-down and gives academia a lesson in laughter!

This has always been my favourite of Rodney's movies; it has just the right mix of humour and heart. The film does come off as a bit dated and like most things in life it wasn't AS good as when I first saw it at the drive-in way back when. But it remains a charming and funny film with a top-notch supporting cast. So practice your Triple Lindy and dive right in.This movie embodies what Rodney Dangerfield was all about... Very fun! - Zoodles
Watching this movie again reminded me why Rodney Dangerfield had so many fans. While he would complain that he got "no respect, no respect at all" this tag line did not apply to his comedic or movie career.
If you liked Dangerfield in Caddyshack or Easy Money then stop what you are doing and Zip this!
Dangerfield plays a multi-millionaire, Thornton Melon, who goes "Back To School" with his son and hilarity ensues. Of course Dangerfield's character is like a "bull in a china shop" at a conservative U.S. college.
Compared to newer stuff like Old School this is pretty tame stuff. The jokes are funny though and if you are predisposed to liking Dangerfield then you probably have already seen this or already have it Ziplisted.
Of interest is that the actor playing Dangerfield's son was also cast in the film adaptation of Stephen King's novel Christine. He was very good in that movie and very good in Back To School as well. He pretty much disappeared from mainstream stuff for awhile but interestingly enough he directed 3 episodes of Dexter!
Of interest is that a very young Robert Downey Jr. plays the friend and room mate of both Melons.
Oh, one other thing to watch for is vintage Sam Kinison as he plays a history teacher! The exchange between him and Dangerfield is hilarious!
Definately worth a rental.Rodney's Shining Moment - Sofa_Spud
The fairly recent death of Rodney Dangerfield prompted me to go back and watch this movie again. I remember not really liking it a whole lot the first time around. It was okay, ya know, but not great.
The second time, though, it really cracked my funny bone. The script and direction may not be the finest you'll ever see, but they've always taken a back seat to Rodney's routines. I'll give this movie three stars. I'd go for an extra half star, but Zip doesn't allow that!
Definitely worth the rental.
