Spike Lee is a pretty subversive director. However, the movie was okay, I only watched half of it. First of all, I found the acting terribly plain, the only character who was any good was the secretary. Second of all, I found it boring. Maybe it was because I grew up in a very liberal location, and was born much later than the racist shows ever aired, but I didn't get most of the references and found them to be outdated and quite offensive.
It would be a good movie to show a History class in High School or University about the degradation of African Americans in the media during the 1900's, but to me, although these issues are still resonant to some degree in some locations around the world, I don't see this movie actually helping anything. It seems that if it was viewed by the wrong group of people it could be used as a weapon of racial hate.Well worth the time - nelsonlonigan
A very astute film that uses (among many things) the main character's Faustian pact with his boss, and his career, to illustrate that though the minstrel show maybe long dead, things may not be changed all that much. Some of the scenes are almost painful to watch at times, but they should be.Don't llisten to the critics - AnarchoPunk
I know this movie hasn't gotten the best reviews, but that is a very misleading occurence. Bamboozled was brilliant. Specifically, Spike Lee was able to produce a film that was both hilarious and sarcastic, while at the same time thought-provoking and meaningful. People who didn't like this movie were probably just uncomfortable with the amount of jokes concerning African Americans and their relationship with white Americans and the media. It is in no way racist against white people, even though some have claimed this. Ultimately, it was a well written and acted movie that was enjoyable and educational to watch.
