Bang The Drum Slowly
"The ultimate baseball movie" -Roger Ebert's Movie Home Companion
Robert DeNiro and Michael Moriarty star in this superbly crafted film about the unlikely friendship between two baseball players. Moriarty plays the team's ace pitcher and social charmer; De Niro is the catcher, a farm boy from Georgia who lacks all of Moriarty's sophistication. He is also dying. During their last season together, the two men grow in manhood and respect for themselves and each other.

I wanted to see this movie because it features Michael Moriarty and Robert De Niro when they were young and just starting their careers. The only thing memorable by De Niro in this low key, talky, fairly pedestrian film was the truly annoying way his jaw moved up and down while he chewed tobacco. I found Moriarty far more compelling, with a better developed character whose flair for evasion and outright lying made me smile a time or two. I was not overly impressed with this movie.Boring Bromance Love Story - CW--
Okay, I'm all for a good tearjerker, but you gotta create characters we care about and a plot that's interesting for that to happen. Bang the Drum doesn't achieve either. Boring voice overs, a Murder She Wrote-like plot of the baseball team coach trying to figure out Bobby D's character's secret and some wooden acting by Michael Moriarity and yes, even De Niro make this a total snoozefest. There were two cool slo-mo shots of a baseball coming towards the camera and a nice scene with De Niro's character's dad, but otherwise? I wanted to see this one because I am a big Robert De Niro fan, but i must say that I was a bit dissappointed with it. The story was somewhat compelling, there was good set of actors, but there just seemed to be something missing for everything to gel together. It wasn't a total waste of time, as there definitely was some good parts, but it wouldn't be such a bad thing to skip it if you're not a De Niro fan.
