Barbarians At The Gate
In the 80's Wall Street had fun at your expense. Now it's time for you to have the last laugh.
The 80's... It was a time when everybody was making the big bucks, but F. Ross Johnson, CEO of R.J.R. Nabisco has every intention of making a fortune. When Johnson (James Garner) decides to buy out the Nabisco shareholders and take over his company, no one is prepared for what hits the fan. Johnson is introduced to the master of the leveraged buyout, Henry Kravis (Johnathan Pryce) but, afraid of losing the company to this sharp dealer, he decides to make his move with Peter Cohen (Peter Riegert). Kravis, however, is not to be outdone, and begins an aggressive campaign of his own. What follows is a down-to-the-wire battle to see who's really king of the Wall Street jungle. They may look like polite, well-dressed businessmen, but listen hard and you can hear the pounding of Barbarians At The Gate.

This film is a hilarious look at the enormity of greed that existed in big business in the 1980's. Written by Larry Gelbart of MASH fame, he dissects big business with the same zest he dissected war. No man or woman is innocent bystander in the quest to make money, and more importantly, screw over the next guy in order to do so. James Garner gives the performance of his life as F.Ross Johnson, a man so damn likable even when he pisses people off, they can't help but shake his hand after. The film works best when it's riding on it's own slicing humour. This could've served the filmmakers well when it came to the actual takeover, but they chose to get serious at the exact moment where zaniness could've played best. It's an enjoyable film, especially as we face another economic downturn. It's good to know that the guys on Wallstreet have always been the big buffoons we're still having to face today.Quite good - MovieLover
This is good stuff.
Quite long could have been shorter.
All about wealth and greed and power and influence in this world gone mad.
And of course about America, where only millions anfd billions seem to matter, and money rules the world.
And religion of course, although that's not dealt with in this movie.
But maybe it is: isn't money one of america's most powerful religions?
James Garner the former matinee idol in a strong role: he is good.
TV has done one great thing: it has given older actors a second chance to showcase their talents; and in some cases unsuspected talents.
But James Garner has always had some fineroles, right from the early days of the Americanization of Emily to Victor, Victoria.Barbarians At The Gate - CJG-
I was delighted to stumble on this excellent TV movie late one night. Garner is great as the mega-rich company exec who comes unstuck when he tries to buy his own company. The financial shenanigans are well explained and there's genuine tension in the result. Based on a true story. It's like WALL STREET with laughs
