Bats
"Bats is frightfully good fun!" - Bill Bregoli, Westwood One
Something is coming in the night. The dark air fills with the sound of flapping wings and menacing shrieks. The night has wings and fear takes flight.
Swarms of genetically altered bats have descended upon a sleepy, small Texan town and no one is safe. The only hope to stop the growing tide of bloody devastation is a zoologist who studies bats, (Dina Meyer, Starship Troopers), her assistant (Leon, Cliffhanger) and the local sheriff (Lou Diamond Phillips, The Big Hit). Bats is a jolting ride of sight, sound and fear.

Bats. Just like the title suggests, this movie is about... bats. Well genetically altered bats that are terrorizing a whole town. The army (who else?) has decided to turn bats into killing machines. Not only are the two original bats genetically altered, excessively aggressive, killing machines, but the have the capability of passing it on to other bats. So the sheriff and the scientist and her assistant have only 1 day to stop the bats or the army will wipe the city off the face of the Earth.Well, there's definitely bats in this movie - Megasteakman
While overly formulaic, this movie is still enjoyable. The characters are all pretty stock familiars to the action/horror genre, and as a result there aren't really any standout performances. The CGI special effects were also a little distracting, although I liked the puppet Bats. At times the movie reminded me of Gremlins, although without the anti-consumerism fun. The editing was probably the best part of this movie: very fast, frenetic and well done. The sound mix was equally exciting. Basically if you want to see bats "go to town," as it were, then check it out.Not That Bad!!! - Monster_in_the_Cave
This ‘ok’ little creature feature has taken a lot of bashing over the years and I don’t understand why. If you like this type of flick...ie “Genetically-Mutated-Bats escape and it's up to a Bat-Expert and the Local Sheriff to stop them”, then you will like ‘Bats’. What’s not to like? You got a ‘monster’, archetypes; sexy female and matching male, some comedy relief by the assistant to the Bat-Expert and a few good horror moments and scares. Nothing about this flick is great, but nothing is really bad either…it’s an OK flick of its type and a nice little time-killer.
Director, Louis Morneau (Carnasaur 2, Hitcher 2) constructs is pretty good presentation but he is unable to rise above ordinary in all his movies. The entire movie seems to be a paint-by-numbers version of the script by John Logan (Gladiator, The Aviator) and seems to be missing that little ‘something’ that would make it ‘above average’. There is nothing very surprising and/or new in the story (except for the placement of the scares), but it does have some nice moments of horror and gore (predictability isn’t always a bad quality). ‘Bats’ was made for approximately $6.5M and scored about $5M on opening weekend, and it eventually grossed double its budget during its theatrical tour.
