This movie had winning moments and included a lot of good speeches, but those speeches made for poor dialogue. At times, the characters' conversations were so far from any real-life interaction that the actors seemed to wince along with me. I also found the characters to be unbelievable. Timothy Hutton was so likeable and therefore so utterly unbelievable as someone who would have two separate conversations about the possibility of starting up a relationship with a 13-yr-old. His actual girlfriend was utterly bland when she finally showed up, and yet everyone was so taken with her. It didn't hold together for me, but there were some good moments, which, surprisingly often involved Rosie O'Donnell.R.I.P. Ted Demme - FilmJunkie
It is hard to describe just how good Ted Demme was at what he did. He makes you connect with lovely, flawed characters so much that you practically bleed in his name.
Demme died far too young, but he left some genius pieces of cinema. Most espeically this story of a man (my beloved Timothy Hutton) who returns to his hometown (yes the new TV show 'October Road' is based on this movie) to rediscover what he lost in his youth.
His friends are deadbeats and losers, but each has his own charm. And then there is the lovely visiting cousin (Uma Thurman) who sweeps into town and teaches each man about the value of what he has at home.
My favorite part of this movie is Natalie Portman as Hutton's pre-teen neighbour. She is the oracle of the piece, too smart for her own good, she steals the movie with the same tragic knowing she gave to 'Garden State'.
What a series of debuts for such a young actress! From 'The Professional' to this, Portman was destined to be a star.
A lovely film.Beautiful Girls - fasteddy
This movie of a young man returning home to his 10 year high school reunion. Shows that you can still go home... but everything you hoped would be the same sometimes isnt and coming home again just brings back the insecurities and heart ache that made you leave your freinds and family in the first place. I see alot of myself in this movie and watching it was like going home even if it was for a couple of hours Great Movie!
