Before Sunrise
"Two Thumbs Up." - Siskel & Ebert
Yesterday strangers, today inseparable soulmates. But separate they must in just a few hours. Jesse and Celine are making every moment count, pouring as much living as they can into the time Before Sunrise.
From Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused) comes another smartly observed tale of young people at a crossroads. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy play twentysomethings who meet on a train in Europe, sense a connection and explore after-hours Vienna together. The people, places and allure of the city become their sudden itineraries. Love is their destination. On the way there's the mutual sharing of hope, jokes, dreams, worry and wonder. It's a day to linger in their memories. And a valentine to young love forever.

A romance but not a fluffy chick flick. - Forester
I don't buy many movies, only those I genuinely would want to watch again. After renting this once I knew it was just such a movie. I love the dialogue--it is engrossing and I don't know how the playing time of the movie slips by really with not much more than two people talking. I love the acting--Hawke & Delpy play their parts with such an intuitive genuineness that you feel you have met their characters in real life. It is like being a voyeur of this chance encounter and only the hardest heart would not be feeling what they feel as the final scene closes. Why not? - CedrickMain
Writers Richard Linklater and Kim Krizen choreographed a slice of life shared by two separate travelers, both on their way back home. An opportunity is taken by a French student and a young American man to realize their instant mutual attraction. They spend the night together in Vienna, with little money , and in the safety net of anonymity they express their truths and observations, fears and disappointments. What is nice about this film is its understatedness. The scenes, shot by Lee Daniel, are quiet and wide angled, nicely capitalising on the natural light and settings of Vienna and the steady movement of train travel. Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke do a great job of executing self professions that could easily have become trite and corny in the wrong hands. Director, Richard Linklater ties all the elements together with an even, mature hand, giving respect to the intellect and wonder of passion on the doorstep of adulthood. When I first heard about this movie, I wasn't sure that it would be something I was interested in. I'm not a big fan of romance movies, and it turned out being a great choice. It is a romance movie, but it's also set in beautiful Vienna.
The movie follows around Jesse (Hawke) and Celine (Deply) after he invites her to spend the night with him walking around Vienna. It goes from an awkward beginning to a heart-wrenching ending.
This movie is great mostly because it follows around two main characters only. There are a few characters that they speak with once or twice, but most of the movie is held up simply by the conversation between Deply and Hawke. I thought it would make for a quick snooze, but at no point during the movie was there any kind of lull or boring scenes to fast-forward through.
Great movie, can't wait to watch Before Sunset.
