Best In Show
"This comic jigsaw puzzle is crammed with deliriously funny bits." -Stephen Holden, The New York Times
Si-i-i-t. Sta-a-a-a-a-y. Laugh! Best In Show is "the year's funniest movie." (Lou Lumenick, New York Post). Waiting For Guffman's Christopher Guest directs and many of the film's stars (including Fred Willard as a loopy commentator) reunite for this zany look at dog show participants (and the pooches who love them). Join the fun as Mayflower Kennel Club competitors - a fly-fishing shop owner from Pine Nut, NC (Guest), Shih-Tzu-doting partners (Michael McKean and Jon Michael Higgins), squabbling yuppies (Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock), a dim-bulb trophy wife (Jennifer Coolidge) and her ace handler (Jane Lynch) and a married couple (Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara) who dream up ditties about terriers - vie for the top prize. It's howlarious!

I'm almost sorry to have to write this... but didn't find it funny at all. Mind you I'm not a dog owner, so perhaps the nuances were lost on me. There were moments that cracked a smile, but no side splitting laughter or memorable one liners I can use. Sorry, a no go for me!Nailing soft targets - eli_quincy
By mocking the obsessive types who frequent the dog-show circuit, "Best in Show" takes dead aim at some fairly soft targets. But that doesn't mean the movie isn't hilarious. Those who enjoy the Christopher Guest comedies -- and his typically hilarious ensemble casts -- are sure to like this one. And Fred Willard shines even brighter than usual as a dim-witted commentator.Best fake dog show documentary ever - wienerdog
Another of Christopher Guest's mockumentaries, Best in Show follows the owners of five show dogs as they compete at the Mayflower Dog Show in Philadelphia. Each owner (or couple) is a standard archetype pushed to extremes, and yet with perhaps one or two exceptions, the characters all come across as people with real depth to them, even if none of them are the smartest people in the world. I am told that one can find real-life examples of all of these characters at almost any real dog show.
There isn't much story here: the movie is about the characters, their behaviour, and their reactions. Someone does win Best in Show, but it doesn't really matter. There is a separate story around each dog and its owners and their friends and associates. Each one is good, but the funniest scenes are the ones featuring the two broadcasters providing commentary for the competition: one is a reserved and serious dog show veteran, while the other is tactless and clueless and wishes he were covering professional sports.
There isn't much wasted time here. Every scene is worthwhile and the movie is just the right length. It is clever and the actors do an excellent job. I believe that a lot of the lines were actually improvised. Anyone who liked Spinal Tap or any other Christopher Guest projects will probably liek this one too.
