Black Hawk Down
Leave No Man Behind
From acclaimed director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Hannibal) and renowned producer Jerry Bruckheimer (Pearl Harbor, Armageddon) comes a gripping true story about bravery, camaraderie and the complex reality of war. Black Hawk Down stars an exceptional cast including Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor), Eric Bana (Chopper), Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge), Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan), William Fichtner (The Perfect Storm), Ewen Bremmer (Snatch) and Sam Shepard (All The Pretty Horses).
In 1993, an elite group of American Rangers and Delta Force soldiers are sent to Somalia on a critical mission to capture a violent warlord whose corrupt regime has lead to starvation of hundreds of thousands of Somalis. When the mission goes quickly and terribly wrong, the men find themselves outnumbered and literally fighting for their lives.

Black hawk down tells the story of Army rangers and Delta Forces that were caught in the civil war that engulfed Somalia for many years. Somalia has long been gouverned by war lords who rule the country as insatiable dictators. The United States were there with the UN to help distribute humanitary aid but encoutered the hostily of a big portion of the population. Black hawk down are helicopters that went down in Mogadisciu where the Somalian people captured and killed soldiers. It is an incredible story that needs to be retold since the problems in Africa are still there almost 20 years later.Graphic Depiction Of A Country In Chaos - revsdd
Based on the true story of the 1993 deployment of U.S. Forces in Somalia, supposedly to keep order, this film is an interesting and very graphic account of what happened in those months that led up to a total U.S. withdrawal from the region. While the movie makes clear that some sort of "policing" force was necessary to try to establish at least a semblance of order in this completely chaotic and starvation-riddled country ruled by rival warlords, it also clearly questions the effectiveness of the U.S. forces, points out the tensions between the U.S forces and the Pakistani U.N. peacekeepers and demonstrates the uncalled for bravado of some of the American soldiers, who seemed to think this was going to be fun. In the end we see a horrific example of urban warfare as U.S. soldiers have to rescue the crew of a Black Hawk helicopter that was shot down. At the same time, one has to admire the commitment of the Americans to ensure that "no one gets left behind" - even those who were killed.
The cast is clearly secondary to the story here. No one was going to win a best actor award because of that. Not that there weren't good performances, but in the end I really didn't think about the actors. The movie is a little slow starting (although in the first five or ten minutes there's a good introduction to the situation in Somalia) but once the action begins it is chilling. As I said, the violence is extremely graphic. This is not a movie to watch with your seven year old. But it is a very good movie.Excellent! - Buzzit
Powerful movie. I was glad to be able to watch this incredible story. It’s powerful because it seems to represent what American and Canadian solders are going through in the present war in Afghanistan. With solders dying everyday, we can imagine somehow similar combat situations.
I am not a big fan of all-star cast but they generally did a great job. Music, effects and scenes were great. I appreciate the fact that it didn’t present the usual “love stories” that Hollywood producers can’t live without. Well done!
I rented the 3 DVD. Unless you have a lot of time to spare and plan on being a movie producer, skip the second and third dvds – the main movie is really what’s worth watching.
Lastly, I ended asking myself… “Was this movie paid by the American government?”
