Bless The Child
Mankind's Last Hope Just Turned Six.
In the tradition of The Sixth Sense and The Omen comes this riveting supernatural thriller filled with spine-tingling chills and white-knuckle suspense.
Academy Award Winner Kim Basinger stars as Maggie O'Connor, a single woman whose life revolves around her career as a nurse - until the surprise appearance of her sister Jenna (Angela Bettis) and Jenna's newborn baby girl, Cody. When Jenna suddenly disappears, Maggie is left to raise Cody (Holliston Coleman), an autistic child, by herself. But after Jenna returns with a mysterious cult leader (Rufus Sewell) and abducts Cody, Maggie discovers that the child possesses extraordinary powers, powers that forces of evil have waited centuries to control.
Together with a FBI specialist in occult-related crimes (Jimmy Smits), Maggie races to save the life of the innocent girl who may hold the key to save mankind, or destroy it. Co-starring Christina Ricci and Ian Holm, Bless The Child is a thrilling offering for film fans.

Ethereal portrayal of the mysteries of autism - eyewitness
'Bless the child’ is a dramatic and heart pounding adventure whose central character is Cody, a 6 year old girl with autism. The little girl’s portrayal of a high-functioning autistic child is breathtaking. One of the hardest things to describe about autistic children is their incredible capacity for empathy and the casual and eerie connection with God that they seem to have right from birth --This movie captures both.
The special effects are a little over the top, but very justifiable in telling this unique tale of good vs evil. Among my favourite scenes are the one where Cody soothes herself by rocking back and forth while spinning a plate on the floor and the scene in which she runs to comfort an injured bird.
Casting was very well done for this movie - choices for evil cult leader, heroic cop, blessed child and loving aunt were all excellent. I have watched this one a number of times and still enjoy it. ‘Bless The Child’ keeps you engaged right up to the end and is highly entertaining. Well worth the rental. This is a movie that I had never heard of but picked up in some DVD bargain bin (probably to complete a 3 for $20 or something similar). I was actually quite impressed with it. I like all kinds of horror/thriller films but for me, a religious angle to it is usually a good thing. This one is no exception even if the storyline is not very original. The approach taken makes it different enough to be entertaining. The cast here is pretty impressive with numerous familiar faces doing a good enough acting job with a good dialogue. Mind you, all these actors have given much better performances in the past. The sets and locations are very good, the soundtrack is pleasant and appropriate, the camera work is professional. There are quite a few special effects here and although none is really scary, they are very well made. If you're in the mood for a rather tame horror/thriller movie and like Kim Basinger or Jimmy Smits, you will certainly enjoy this one. Rufus Sewell as the bad guy is certainly the actor who gives the best performance here.Like an episode of "Touched by an Angel"... - cathyottawa
...only darker.
If seeing the triumph of good over evil in a movie with heavy religious themes is your thing, you may enjoy this.
I have to agree with Rotton Tomatos though, it's basically a B movie. Kim Basinger is less than stellar here, and Jimmy Smits doesn't have alot to work with. It treads alot of familiar territory, and is fairly predictable.
But, I thought the child actress, Holliston Coleman, was quite good. And Rufus Sewell of "Dark City" fame plays creepy very well. There were some chilling scenes. And did I see Christina Ricci? What the heck is she doing in this movie?
Bottom line - it wasn't terrible, it wasn't great. Ho Hum.
