It was a time when blond bombshells splashed Life Magazine covers and A-bomb tests mushroomed in the desert. The older generation believed in their government, while younger people protested against it. And Blue Sky captures it all! Hard-working, mild-tempered Army scientist Hank Marshall (Jones) has his hands full with explosive nuclear reactors and the equally-volatile Carly (Lange), his beautifully spirited and emotionally vulnerable wife. While he's conducting tests in Nevada, she succumbs to the advances of his superior officer! But her infidelity is not the only dilemma the Marshalls have to face. When a deadly military cover-up puts Hank in jeopardy, it's up to Carly to munster the courage and strength to save the man she loves!

Blue Sky is a dreary, disjointed affair that tries to tie together an anti-nuclear message with a family-in-crisis melodrama. The most significant problem is that the script is more dysfunctional than the Marshall clan. At no time is there a clear sense that this movie is going in any particular direction. It lurches along until stumbling upon something that passes for a conclusion. The ubiquitous Tommy Lee Jones gives a surprisingly bland performance. `Blue Sky" is such an ungainly mixture of politics, emotion and nostalgia that it's a wonder the movie works at all - but it does. The only positive elements in BLUE SKY are that good triumphs over evil and that the family stays together.Entertaining Movie - Ptimmyj
This movie was quite good. Honestly I don't really know why Jessica Lange won an oscar for this... But it is a good movie. One of those movies that could have been done way better. Could have had a better focus on emotions, also the plot wavers a bit with no real high points.

Blue Sky will bring back lots of memories for those who grew up as "military brats". There is the sense of honor and respect for authority and the cookie cutter, run down barracks for housing. This is essentially a story of faithfulness on the part of the husband (Tommy Lee Jones) in the light of the unfaithfulness (and even mental instability) of his wife (Jessica Lange). It is, however, a bit more explicit than a PG rating would suggest.
