Hong Kong Great - Sprock
The Bodyguard from Beijing is one of the first Hong Kong films that I saw in the theatre. The script is not the best but the action is great. My favorite scene is the shootout in the dark where Jet Li uses fling MagLites to search out his enemies. Wow.Chinese Version Of "The Bodyguard" - bwod
Take Kevin Costner's film "The Bodyguard" and turn it into a Chinese Kung Fu scenario, and you have Jet Li's "The Bodyguard From Beijing".
Presented in Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), with English subtitles, the movie has a lot of gun play, large body counts, fairly explicit scenes of violence, and a minimum of actual Kung Fu fighting.
It wasn't what I was expecting, but it wasn't bad. The worst aspect of the dvd is the poor quality of the English subtitles. Many spelling mistakes make the movie almost laughable to watch and understand. I can only marginally recommend it, so I give it one weak thumb up.A bond flick? - JT
At first I thought "So many people getting shot!" without the slightest emotion. Then it occurred to me that this is the type of violence in a James Bond movie. I was thinking there would be more kung fu but alas, there was very little. My favorite line is "If he made mistakes he wouldn't be the bodyguard from Beijing".
Don't try to count how many people get shot in the last ambush scene. Perhaps it's the same 15 people getting shot over and over. The female lead is easy on the eyes anyway.
One thing that was different from a Bond movie; in a "bond movie" they portray technology as they think it should work. In this movie they show technology as it does work. When things blow up there is a change in camera angle and everything stops before it blows up. It was a strange mix of Mandarin and Cantonese with English subtitles. It took me a while to select the audio track that had the sounds and the lips in sync. The plot left quite a few loose ends but arguably was more closely following the love interest between the two main characters and was careful to tie up all the “Fat Po needs money to send his child to an American school” subplot loose ends.
Overall, not bad.
