Breaking Away
"A smashing movie... one of the most rapturously funny, totally unique and eccentric film experiences..." -Rex Reed, Vogue
This charming, Academy Award® winner (1979, Best Screenplay) cycles high on comedy as four friends come to terms with life after high school. When top-notch cyclist Dave (Dennis Christopher) learns that the world's bicycling champions are always Italian, he attempts to turn himself into an Italian, driving his parents (Barbara Barrie, Paul Dooley) crazy. But everything changes after he meets the Italian racing team - an encounter that ultimately leads him and his friends (Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, Jackie Earle Haley) to challenge the local college boys in the town's annual bike race.

Breaking Away is a very charming piece of work. This is about teens who have graduated from high school and try to figure out what to do next with their lives. The film centers around Dave, a cyclist who attempts to be italian after learning that they are the best cyclists.
The title has many meanings all centering around these guys who are trying to break away. Breaking away from boredom. Breaking away from the routine of the job. Basically Just breaking Away.
Dave's attempts to be italian gives the film its funniest moments. The parents' reaction is hilarious, especially the father's refusal to anything to eat anything ending with "ni" and catching his son shaving his legs.
There are also the subtle moments when the guys sit by the lake. Their conversation is real and without cliches.
And of course there is the race in the end when the guys take on some college snobs. The race is amazingly devoid of cliches. You feel like your there, rooting for Dave to win.Breaking Away - Rockhead
A great movie, very enjoyable Tour de force performances, great script and wonderful direction make this a must. For anyone who enjoys watching people overcome certain barriers or come of age.Celebration of human spirit..."Ciao papa...the Italians are coming to Bloomington Indiana for the Mini 500" this movie has something for everyone and the bicycle race sequences are wonderful to watchCharming - legalwright
This 1979 classic film is one of the earlier coming of age stories. It tells the story of four young men who have just completed high school but have yet to assume the responsibilities of adulthood. Born and raised in Bloomington, Illinois, the foursome struggle to find their identities under the shadow of the college culture which dominates the Town.
Unfortunately, the themes presented in this film have been done so many times since then, that the film seems to lack originality when in fact, it was the genesis of much of what was to follow. Notwithstanding this, the humour and parent/teen conflicts presented in this film still withstand the test of time.
Overall, the movie retains its charm and is an easy matinee to watch.
