Cape Fear
The Original Masterpiece Of Revenge, Confrontation and Murder!
Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum star in Hollywood's classic tale of revenge and murder. Robert Mitchum is unforgettable as Max Cady, an ex-con determined to exact a terrible revenge on Sam Bowden (Gregory Peck) and his family.
Sam is a small-town lawyer whose worst nightmare comes true when the criminal he helped put away returns to stalk his beautiful young wife (Polly Bergen) and teenage daughter (Lori Martin). Despite help from the local police chief (Martin Balsam) and a private detective (Telly Savalas), Sam is legally powerless to keep Max from playing his sadistic game of cat and mouse. Finally, Sam must put his family's lives at stake in a deadly trap that leads to one of the most suspenseful and heart-pounding confrontations ever committed to film.
Director J. Lee Thompson builds tension with each scene leading to a deadly showdown at Cape Fear. This is truly a masterpiece of shock and suspense.

The best thing about this film is the strong performance by Robert Mitchum of the ex con Cady. He plays a man so cool and calm that it makes you admire him, and yet he's so evil it scares you. I'd recommend this movie on his performance alone. But the movie also features a great performance by Gregory Peck and Telly Savallas also makes an appearance.Fantastic - dural78
This still ranks as a top notch thriller. It's amazing how Max Cady strikes fear into the hearts of his prey and the audience. The use of lighting and the Bernard Hermann score greatly amplifies the sense of terror, and is simply awesome.
This is a classic psychological thriller that was masterfully crafted to appeal to your intellect. Far too often, modern movies of the genre rely on cheap thrills like loud noises. Films of this caliber are a dying breed.Mitchum Is The Man - FilmJunkie
This is the chilling original that inspired the 1991 Scorsese remake. There are some differences merely by the fact that you could only get away with so much in '62, but the overall theme of the predatory, pedophillic ex-con coming after the family of an attorney is still here.
Gregory Peck plays Sam Bowden, an attorney who witnessed Max Cady (Robert Mitchum) attacking a woman and helped to get him locked up for eight months. Cady returns to stalk and frighten Bowden's family, starting with his young daughter, Nancy (Lori Martin).
Cady is one of the more frightening creations in film history, coupled with Mitchum's trademark laugh and you get genuine chills watching him. However when the film turns to the docile Bowden and his family, it gets less interesting. Peck was always a stoic actor and he is totally overshadowed by Mitchum's masterful turn.
There are certainly some laughable moments, some very lame fight scenes and the somewhat unconvincing motivation behind Cady's actions, however whenever Mitchum is on screen this film is horrifying and you can't look away.
