Captain Corelli's Mandolin
"Heartbreaking And Exhilarating." -Baltimore Sun
Academy Award® winner Nicolas Cage (The Family Man) and sexy Penelope Cruz (Vanilla Sky) electrify the screen in this romance from the director of Shakespeare In Love.
Cage stars as Captain Antonio Corelli, an Italian officer whose company of soldiers is sent to Cephallonia, a beautiful Greek island untouched by war. A free spirit with a passion for music and romance, Corelli is enchanted by Cephallonia and its people -- especially Pelagia (Cruz), the gorgeous, proud daughter of the island's doctor (John Hurt). Engaged to a local fisherman (Christian Bale), Pelagia resists Corelli's attentions, but the kind and charming captain weakens for her defenses. Surrendering their hearts, Corelli and Pelagia begin a heated affair. But before their love can grow, the war crashes on Cephallonia's shores, forcing Corelli and Pelagia to make dangerous sacrifices for country and home...and risk losing each other forever.

I would have thought that Nick Cage's Italian heritage would have prepared him a little better for his Italian accent in this, however it really is a sweet love story. The reluctant soldier is a great plot device and both the action scenes and the Greek scenery are very well done. A great date flick.Absolutely dreadful! - sinic
The movie might have been somewhat watchable if Nick Cage didn't try to use that horrible Italian accent in the movie. It was so horrible, that it distracted from what would otherwise be a nice love story. As it is, the acting is so bad you simply cannot watch this movie and get into it at all. The casting of Cage for this part was absolutely a huge mistake. Stay away ... read the book!Do yourself a favour and read the book instead - Urban_Sherpa
After reading the novel this movie was (loosely) based on, I had to see just how badly the movie had butchered it. The book is stunning in its breadth and scope, and I'm sad to say the movie has nothing of this quality. The sadism of the communist partisans, the atrocities committed by the Nazis in Greece, the horror that was the Albanian campaign -- all of these are seriously downplayed, to the point where nothing remains of the spirit of the novel. Worse still, the strained lack of chemistry between Cage and Cruz makes Captain Corelli's Godawful Mandolin fail as even a trite Hollywood romance.
