This is Chris Rock's first major stand-up special and it's a stone-cold classic for a reason. His musings on race relations and relationships are as funny, raw and daring as they were 15 years ago. I will say that the some of the very topical humour hasn't aged quite as well -- we're talking about O.J., here -- but it doesn't detract from one of the greatest stand-up comedy specials of the 1990s.Chris Rock got funnier over the years... - Cricri7
I have seen many Chris Rock shows and I have to say that he got better over the years. His first shows, especially this one, were a bit too raunchy for me. His jokes about beating women and understanding about killing them is a bit too much for me. The rest of his show is funny though. He knows how to laugh at everyone, that is his best quality in his humor. Scared straight is still his best show ever. Leave this one be and zip Scared straight.Understated comedy teetering on touchy subject matters - AvidOscarBee
This is Chris Rock's first HBO stand up comedy special performed before a live audience in Washington, D.C. when he was 30 years old, shortly after having a small but short stint on Saturday Night Live. Prior to this, his career was in a slump and needing a boost.
This performance solidified him as being the young, up and coming current face of American black comedy. Shall we say he was seen as the younger version of Eddie Murphy and thus what appears to achieve overnight success.
The opening scene before his performance shows Chris entering the back stage in a black suit with black shoes with white tops. Then a series of comedy albums appear which are just a few of the greatest comedians that have been a strong influence on Chris Rock (i.e. Bill Cosby, Woody Allen, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Roger Dangerfield, and many more.
All topics are open for discussion with Chris such as The Million Man March, Marion Barry, O.J. Simpson, relationships, black people vs. "niggers". He takes chances and is sometimes fearless in his controversial subject matter and delivery. Albeit there is too much foul language for my liking but Chris Rock is funny and can deliver.
His act lasts just under 60 minutes and the extra special features are about 20 minutes, which are informative and worth watching. Enjoy! Not his best act, but at the time for someone who was up and coming, a good start to what will be a long and successful career.
