Cops and Robbers - moviedoug
This is a tale of an undercover cop who gets in very deep into a jewelery heist gang. He has handed in his resignation and wants nothing but to be out of that situation but is forced by his superiors to stay undercover until the gang is arrested. Most of the action is gun play and Chow and is a very sarcastic and funny character. He doesn't act like a cop and that is why he is trusted in the crime world. Overall is a good hong kong police drama with good action.Amazing movie, terrible DVD - jimmycanuck
City On Fire is a terrific example of top notch Hong Kong action, but this DVD ONLY offers an English dub. There's no way to watch this with the original audio and subs, and what's worse, the dub is dreadful. Here's to hoping zip gets a better version of this soon!As an action flick, it leaves little to desire - Gringo
In the action department there are few movies I've seen that are more gripping and well directed.
Ringo Lam uses Hong Kong New Wave aesthetics for great effect but doesn't over do it making the film too experimental. The style isn't as unique as someone like John Woo, but doesn't stand out above what's happening on screen. The only thing really to complain about is some of the more romantic/relationship scenes, it's not that romantic scenes were out of place, they just weren't played so well, and at times brought the pace to a grinding halt, yet they do factor huge in the end so they are nessesary and, really, a little flaw.
And of course, in alot of cases a movie is only as good as it's climax, and this film has an incredible final 30 minutes, borrowed heavily, of course, by Tarantino in Reservoir Dogs (as I guess is old news), yet still appears amazing, and to be corny: Edge-of-your-seat.
Needless to say, I want to see more Ringo Lam, if this is the kind of thing he puts out.
The big problem with this DVD is that it is dubbed and makes some lines laughable, where they would probably have been more dramatic if we had the original performances intact, yet it's easy to put up with it if it means you get to see the film.
