Claudine
Diahann Carroll was nominated for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe award for her gripping portrayal as the indomitable Claudine in this heartwarming comedy. While struggling to support herself and her six children in Harlem by working as a maid for a wealthy family, Claudine (Carroll) meets a charming garbage man, Roop (James Earl Jones). But although Roop is smitten with the lovely single mother, his own life trials make him slow to respond to her invitation to a lifetime of love. The touching story of Claudine will inspire smiles and tears in viewers of all ages.

Ain't No "Good Times" - McStinky
Back in 1974 a new tv sitcom called "Good Times" began airing. It was a light hearted look at a black family living in the Projects of Chicago. As a teen, this was my reference to the world of the unprivileged living in the big city. It couldn't be too bad I thought. It sounded like JJ got his share of Big Macs and the laugh track was always going.
Had I seen the movie Claudine later that same year, my views might have changed. Claudine is a much more sense look at the same topic. It tells the story of a single black mother (Diahann Carroll), living on welfare, who finds love with a garbage collector (James Earl Jones). The two fall in love and they have thoughts of marriage. But years of bad decisions puts them in a catch 22 situation. If they marry, Claudine will lose all her welfare rights and the family would even be poorer.
I highly recommend this movie.
