I had read the reviews but opted to zip this movie even if they were all bad...well....one more bad review sadly! I can't fathom how Tim Robbins dropped the ball with this one. Just look at the cast and the story line and he could have had something wonderful on his hands. I would have fired the writers and did some major script surgery. I think I have never seen a movie with so many talented actors. It was filmed in New York and is and ensemble of well known actors and lesser known but all incredibly talented. Even so, it is a major flop! Believe us and don't zip it.snoozer - peep
The cradle will rock and you will sleep. I didn't even bother watching the whole movie. It was slow and very boring. It had potential to be a good movie, a lot of big stars, a good plot but it just ends up being really bad. I won't waste your time on this oneThe cradle will rock... - LK--
and when the bough breaks, the cradle will fall, and down will come communists... one and all...
Or at least that's what self-proclaimed communist-hunters and censors would wish for.
A man writes a play. And no one is ALLOWED to perform the play for the public. It's THAT threatening. Why? Because someone in authority thinks it's somehow too communist or anti-government to let the ordinary person hear it/see it. Is this movie set in Europe? Asia? NO... the U.S. of A, in the 1930's. Based on a true story, and using a huge variety of actors you really wouldn't expect to see in the same movie (some portraying real actors such as John Houseman and Orson Welles) (and doing a really accurate job too!) this movie shows in a kind of off-beat but effective way how the "world" (citizens of the USA) were threatened by a play one American man wrote.
Full of twists and turns, the actors have to come up with a very novel and unexpected way to "perform" the play for the public without actually "Performing" it for the public. Rent this fascinating movie to find out how they do it, and the price some would pay for freedom of speech! An excellent movie.
