NC-17 and R-Rated Versions
Take a psycho-sexual journey into oblivion with James Spader and Holly Hunter in this controversial film from acclaimed director David Cronenberg. Spader stars as James Ballard, a bored film director who explores new realms after a near fatal car accident introduces him to a world of sexually obsessed car crash enthusiasts. Unsatisfied by his marriage, Ballard joins Dr. Helen Remington and begins to explore the eroticism of the car the sexual violence of auto accidents. His quest eventually leads him to Vaughan, a renegade scientist overcome by the erotic power of the crash. CRASH is shocking, controversial and eerily possible.

To be honest with you I got this movie because of the performances of James Spader and Holly Hunter. It's not everyone's cup of tea and if you read the plot (people turned on by car crashes begin to stage and record them) and it doesn't interest you then you won't like it. I doubt this movie was made for mass appeal but the movie's intended audience will enjoy it.Appreciate what Cronenberg is TRYING to do. - Milo_Bloom
I first saw this on VHS. When I rented it, I noticed that the previous person to rent it had not rewound the tape, and that they had only watched about half the movie. So I rewound the tape to the beginning and pressed play.
After a while, I got fed up with how bored I was and I hit 'eject'. I looked at the tape and I saw that I had quit at almost the exact same point as the previous person to rent the tape.
So, I decided to just take a break and then finish the movie.
I don't want to give too much away, but I like to think about this movie this way: A good director tries to make the audience feel the same emotions that the characters in the film are feeling. This creates a huge dilemma if the emotion the characters are feeling is "boredom". How do you convey that emotion without alienating your audience completely?
In short, this movie is a challenge, but I think it's worth it in retrospect.Good canadian movie - osk-
This movie might seem a bit shocking to some but the concept of the movie is actually very refreshing. The way each of the four main characters is presented really allows you TRY to understand them.
The acting and cinematography are both really well done, but at some moments the volume is really low.
Overall, a solid 4 stars for this great, although dark, drama!
