Cries And Whispers
Legendary director Ingmar Bergman creates a testament to the strength of the soul - and a film of absolute power. Karin and Maria come to the aid of their dying sister, Agnes, but jealousy, manipulation, and selfishness come before empathy. Agnes, torch red by cancer, transcends the pettiness of her sisters' concerns to remember moments of being - moments that Bergman, with the help of Academy Award-winning cinematographer Sven Nykvist, translates into pictures of staggering beauty and unfathomable horror.

Whenever I don't like a movie that is pretty much universally praised like this one is I try to read more about it to understand why I didn't like it. The whole time I was watching this I thought it was pretentious, dumb and boring. After visiting the imdb boards/rotten tomatoes I stand by that statement. Apparently if you don't like this movie you only like seeing things with a bunch of explosions or Megan Fox in them. In reality, I'm smarter than you, and this sucked.Cries and Whispers - RogerDaniels
A very powerful film, but an extremely depressing one as-well. Ingmar Bergman's luscious family drama deals with his usual themes of life, death and faith but takes a unique twist on them, allowing you to soak up the exposition in interspersed flashbacks and quiet character moments where the information is all in the body language. The only enjoyment in the film comes from the beautifully filmed colours and superb quality of the performances held within. The rest of the film is shockingly morose and very affecting. "Cries and Whispers" is a rare kind of film, and one not to be taken lightly.Emotional and Haunting - Jag114
Cries and Whispers is probably the harshest films I have ever seen. Bergman doesn’t seem to hold back at all in this story of three sisters, Agnes, Karin and Maria and a house maid Anna, and a few other people here and there. Agnes is on her death bed and is dieing of a very painful disease. Her sisters and Anna are taking care of her, but through the ordeal you end up learning about them from conversations between them, flashbacks and a very emotional dream sequence. Some of the people in the film are not the nicest, and can actually be surprisingly mean. This is definitely not a happy or feel good film, but a very interesting characters study about a few people dealing with someone’s death.
In my opinion this is also a great film. I love the artful directing. The camera movement, the set designs and the way the scenes fade into a red screen. The emotion is so strong in the film, and the depiction of death so haunting you cant help but be left thinking after.
