Crooklyn
Make yourself at home with the Carmichael family as they experience one very special summer in their Brooklyn neighborhood that they've affectionately nicknamed "Crooklyn". Renowned director Spike Lee fashions a bold, flavorful picture of family life that nominee Alfre Woodard stars as Carolyn, a loving, but fiercely independent mother who along with her musician husband Woody struggles to raise her family in difficult but often wonderful circumstances. Complemented by an energizing, vintage R & B soundtrack, this tender, colorful film is fitting tribute to an American family.

this movie gave me a headache!
the first hour was nothing but screaming and I wanted to slap just about every character in the movie to make them shut up!
I should have watched the movie on mute, however I would have missed the stunning soundtrack!
this is the worst spike lee movie I have seenInner city reality with a heart - AvidOscarBee
Spike Lee has done a wonderful job of showing life as it was back in the 70's in Brooklyn, New York. This movie centres around a family of 7, lead by the marvelous Alfre Woodard (playing Carolyn Carmichael as the mother) and Delroy Lindo (playing Woody Carmichael as the father). A truly wonderful performance is seen by the only daughter in the house, Zelda Harris (who plays (Troy). The bantering language is hilarious, not to mention the fighting, inner city mischief and a general sense that this is how most neighbourhoods used to be. Everyone would be sitting outside their home on the sidewalk just watching people, kids playing in the street or getting into mischief. A truly delightful film with miminal swearing and next to no violence. The tragedy that comes upon this family is sad but they handle it with depth and grace.A precious gem - MalcolmTen
Crooklyn is a unique film everyone should try simply for its being a nostalgia piece from the point of view of a young black girl. If you grew up in a big city or if you grew up black, then this movie is a must-see for you.
Although its setting is the 60's (my own parents' childhood days), I didn't even realize that until long after I'd seen it the first time. I felt such a connection to its images that I assumed that it was set in the same time of my own childhood in the 80's. The music didn't even tip me because my parents listened to all those same tracks all throughout my childhood.
Apart from the nostalgia, the family interactions are so real that I still (after 10 years of watching it once or twice a year) laugh heartily throughout the movie. Even though I know everything that's coming.
Four brothers with one sister just happens to be the make-up of my own family, and Crooklyn hits the real notes every time. The fighting, the competition, the difference in behavior when momma's home versus when she's not. All hit right on the spot. Spike keeps it real, evincing the best laughter by displaying truthful moments.
