Cry Freedom
The tension and terror that is present-day South Africa is powerfully portrayed in director Richard Attenborough's sweeping story of black activist Stephen Biko and a liberal white newspaper editor who risks his own life to bring Biko's message to the world.
After learning of apartheid's true horrors through Biko's eyes, editor Donald Woods discovers that his friend has been silenced by the police. Determined not to let Biko's message go unheard, Woods undertakes a perilous quest to escape South Africa and bring Biko's remarkable tale of courage to the world. The riveting, true story offers a stirring account of man at his most evil and most heroic.

Powerful - Tells the Story of Steve Biko!!! - Filmaholic
Denzel Washington gives an incredible performance as Steve Biko. This film is a must see and should be shown in schools to students.
It is filled with memorable quotes and Washington deserved an Oscar for his portrayal of Biko. Nelson Mandella gets all the credit and few have heard of Biko.
This fantastic film gets the message out and shows how truly ridiculous and harmful Apartheid was.
Keep watching as it goes through all the 'mysterious deaths' that occurred while in prison.
This coupled with Sarafina would certainly educate young people about Apartheid.
If you have not seen it - SEE IT NOW! If you have see it again.
A FANTASTIC FILM!Black History..not to b missed - spark22
I have seen this movie 3 times. The first time back when apartheid was happening. Being young I had no idea that this subversion of the people os South Africa was going on. For me this was a devastating eye-opener. One thing I remember distinctly was that the black people wanted to create their own history. Steven Biko achieved his popularity through peaceful and loving means...at the cost of his life. A film not to miss!A Excellent Anti-Apartheid Film - MovieProf
I just finished watching this film. As great as this film is, I was surprised to look and see that it wasn't nominated for Best Picture in 1987, although Denzel Washington was nominated for his acting in the film. Director Richard Attenborough took his time in preparing for the film, and used Donald Woods and his wife as advisors for the film. The film itself is beautifully photographed, although not in South Africa--neighbouring Zimbabwe faithfully stands in. This is a rare treat in cinema: an accurate retelling of an event that made international headlines in the late 1970s. The story of Steven Biko, though not as famous as that of Nelson Mandela, nonetheless did much to further the cause against the oppressive system of apartheid that gripped South Africa until the early 1990s. This is a film not to be missed.
