This was one of the slowest, most boring movies I've ever rented. I like to give films a chance, but I couldn't even make it all the way through this one. Telling the story of a hick family may make a good movie, but only if the story is worth telling! Don't waste your time on this one.Hillbilly Hell - Peterborough_Pete
Very dull story of a quirky back-woods family that has very little plot and fewer than five laugh-out-loud moments. The acting was quite good by most of the stellar cast, just not enough to work with.
I was eager to see this movie because I'm a huge John Prine fan and his character played an important role. Prine's wonderful "In Spite of Ourselves", written for the film and played during the closing credits, nearly made up for a crappy movie experience.What a Yawner! - MovieLover5
Disko has it pretty much summed up the same way I feel about it. I found the film very monotonous although I did stick through to the end hoping it would get better; it didn't. (I'll even confess I actually fell asleep for a few minutes about two thirds of the way through. What does that say about how interestibg the movie is?) And I'm not too sure about the term "serio-comedy". Maybe the serious part is accurate, but the comedy tag is is questionable unless you get a kick out of watching alcoholics running each other down.
Maybe this is what can be termed 'an actor's film', with loads of dialogue but not much else.
