Dead Reckoning
Academy Award® winner Humphrey Bogart is at his best as a hardboiled sleuth in this '40s film noir classic. In one of his most exciting roles, the inimitable Bogie plays Rip Murdock, an ex-G.I. trying to find out who framed his pal Johnny for murder-and then rubbed him out!
Tracing his war buddy's shadowy past leads Rip to Coral Chandler (Lizabeth Scott), who was once Johnny's sweetheart. Now she's a chanteuse in a nightclub run by brutal gangster, Martinelli (Morris Carnovsky). Rip gets a taste of the beautiful blonde's seductive charms and soon finds himself ensnared in a twisted web of deceit and danger. Is Coral an innocent thrush-or is she a predatory siren leading Bogie to the Dead Reckoning?

This is definitely film noir and Bogart plays his usual keen investigative character that gets wrapped up in troubles that aren't his.
Although it follows traditional turns and twists that are no longer surprising because of their constant use, it still makes for an enjoyable ride.

The classic film noir story of an average Joe who has accidentally gotten himself into something of a mess. A mess that involves all the dirty linen of all the local bigshots, on both sides of the law.
Bogart's character (Captain Rip Murdock, US Army) got there the best way possible, trying to help a war buddy. His buddy has gone A.W.O.L. and Murdock tracks his friend to his home town, a fictitious city in the US South. Unfortunately, his buddy soon ends up a charred corps in the local morgue.
Now Murdock has to find his buddy's killers, avoid being killed himself, stop the local flat foots from pinning a murder on him, and navigate the dangerous waters posed by his dead buddy's girl. The cops are not corrupt, but they are not so bright either, and are immediately suspicious of this stranger in town who seems too interested in the bodies down at the morgue.
Fortunately, for Murdock, he is no goodytwoshoes either. A reservist called up to do his bit for Uncle Sam. His civilian life is in the twilight world of taxicabs in the notoriously mobbed up city of St. Louis, MO. In order to save himself and bring the killers to justice, Murdock is not above using all the contacts and lessons he has learned living a life on the edges of the underworld.
A must rent title for anyone who likes this type of movie.
